AutoZone Launches iPhone App

AutoZone launched a free iPhone application in June. The app "extends our automotive repair expertise to iPhone users in new ways by adding some of the top-used features and functionality on AutoZone.com," e-commerce director Jamey Traywick said in a release.The app lets users: locate stores and get directions by entering a ZIP code or using the phone's built-in GPS locator. create and store their own vehicle information (to personalize the shopping experience). create and manage shopping lists (to expedite in-store visits). check pricing and availability for parts at a specific store. access vehicle-specific repair instructions. view their AutoZone Rewards account balance.In other activity, AutoZone in May added a "Store Pickup" option to its e-commerce site. The selected store sends an email to the shopper when the order is ready.Promotional ActivityAmong recent efforts, AutoZone offered: select Eagle One car-care products at two for $7, promoting via dedicated endcaps, window posters and circular features. (See Images at right.) a $10 store gift card with purchase of a "5+ quarts" jug of Exxon Mobil Corp.'s Mobil 1 motor oil. Online ads support. a free LED flashlight with any $50 online purchase.Additionally, the chain devoted endcaps to car-care products from Turtle Wax and Meguiar's. (See Images at right.)Displays and SignsDoor clings with a "Quench Your Thirst" message promote the availability of single-serve beverages from Coca-Cola Co. that are merchandised in coolers near checkout. Ceiling mobiles support. AutoZone has worked with Coca-Cola on previous in-store efforts. (See "Coke Takes Different Road with AutoZone.")Similar door clings promote WD-40 Co.'s water-displacing spray.Loyalty ProgramsThe chain is using window posters and clings to promote the AutoZone Rewards loyalty program. Recent offers have included $20 in store credit with five $20 purchases. (See Images at right.)Store GrowthAutoZone, Memphis, TN, operates 4,309 stores in the U.S, including 21 locations opened during the third quarter. The company plans to open 140 to 160 stores in fiscal 2011 (beginning in August), chief executive officer Bill Rhodes told Bloomberg this month. Specific "under-penetrated" markets targeted for expansion are New York, Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia, Milwaukee, and Orlando and Tampa, FL, Rhodes told the news service. The chain is also considering new stores in Washington, Oregon and Idaho.
