Walgreens Lowers Prices for Pilot Program

In its efforts to survive and thrive in trying retail times, Walgreens has never been shy about testing new ideas and concepts.

From its debut and expansion of flagship stores in large urban environments and the establishment of a technology center of excellence in Chicago, to the elimination of print circulars in some markets and the introduction of optical stores in others, Walgreens is evolving.

The latest move from the drugstore chain is a pilot program in Gainesville, FL, testing new approaches to pricing, promotions, product selection and the shopping experience. The program launched this spring in 17 stores, and Walgreens says it will listen to customer reaction and adjust quickly based on feedback, and also roll out new ideas to additional stores.

"At these stores, we are introducing a compelling retail experience that combines lower everyday prices, the products customers ask for most often and modern convenience," Walgreens president Alex Gourlay said in a media release. "We plan to continue to expand the Gainesville pilot in the coming months with new service innovations while piloting additional offers and service combinations at locations in Chicago and other markets."

According to reports, Walgreens will lower SKU counts per store by at least 20%.

As part of the pilot, Walgreens says it:

  • has lowered everyday prices on more than 5,000 items, including health and beauty, personal care, grocery and household items.
  • has introduced Walgreens Plus, a subscription program through which consumers who pay a $20 annual fee receive an additional 20% off prices storewide every day up to 60% savings on prescriptions purchased in participating stores. Walgreens Plus members also will have the option of free, same-day prescription delivery.
  • is collaborating with Sprint to test an offer giving Gainesville-area consumers convenient access to Sprint's products and services.
  • is extending its package delivery collaboration with FedEx by providing an expanded selection of packing and shipping supplies.
  • is expanding its existing pilot with LabCorp to 10 Florida locations, including four in Gainesville, to make available specimen collection for lab testing in a secure, comfortable environment.
