Walgreens, J&J Offer Up a SkinID

Walgreens this month officially introduced an exclusive online skincare analysis tool that the retailer first promoted back in February.

A May 3 media release revealed that the retailer’s SkinID tool leverages Johnson & Johnson’s SkinID technology to recommend products based on inputs it receives from consumers about their individual breakouts and skin types. It is available for use on a dedicated walgreens.com landing page and requires users to answer six multiple-choice questions.

Participants receive a personalized, three-step skin routine, and Walgreens saves the inputs from logged-in members of its Beauty Enthusiast club for future reference.

“Skin care should be the foundation of any healthy beauty regimen,” Lauren Brindley, Walgreens group vice president of beauty and personal care, said in a news release. “SkinID is just the beginning of how Walgreens plans to address our customers’ skin health moving forward.”

“When customers don’t see the results they are looking for because they purchased the wrong products, they end up frustrated,” Sharon Holubek-Bank, J&J senior director, customer development, said in the release. “By collaborating with Walgreens, we hope to improve the whole shopping experience for consumers.”

Based on use by one P2PI editor, the tool recommends J&J products such as Neutrogena, Vaseline, Clean & Clear and Aveeno as well as other manufacturers’ brands, including Unilever’s Noxzema, RB’s Clearasil and The Mentholatum Co.’s Oxy.

The tool was first promoted via email on Feb. 7. Additional support at launch includes a feature in the retailer’s May coupon book that promotes Neutrogena and Clean & Clear products, as well as shelf talkers positioned near related products in-aisle.
