Petco Finds New Vehicles for E-Commerce

Petco is in the midst of a major e-commerce push, rolling out a new subscription service and mobile application.

The Petco app lets users create profiles for their pets to shop products based on animal type or brand, reorder past purchases, or manage repeat delivery orders. It also contains a store finder. Petco previously only had an app devoted to sharing pet pictures.

The new app quietly launched on April 30 but was first promoted with a May 30 Facebook update. Consumers who responded to the update by June 14 with what their pet would order from the app were entered in a sweepstakes awarding a $100 store gift card.

Petco subsequently introduced a Petco One subscription service for cats that delivers monthly packages including wet and dry cat food, treats from private label WholeHearted and a toy. Shoppers can choose what flavors of cat food they want when they create a profile for their pet. The service's $35 fee also includes a 30-pound bucket of So Phresh litter each month, which shoppers pick up in stores, a quarterly cardboard scratcher, and a monthly voucher for an expedited answer to a question asked via Petco One members receive free standard shipping on all other e-commerce purchases via

Facebook and Instagram updates promote the program. A spokesperson for the retailer said on Petco's Facebook page that a similar effort for dogs is in the works, though Petco already owns dog subscription service PupBox.
